Over the years, Puebla has quietly become one of the most important producing regions in Mexico and even surpassed Oaxaca in terms of productivity.
These coffees are grown in a river valley that grades up in the midst of a dense, tropical forest. The tropical microclimate in combination with the northern latitude results in a slower ripening period. Producers from this region are of Totonaca descent. Though they maintain longstanding ancestral customs like farming practices, traditional clothing, and language, they have received assistance from the local Puebla government to aid and modernize their coffee production. Like many coffee producing regions where smallholder farming is common, this coffee is a blend of local varietals from multiple producers, all of which has been processed at a communal washing station.
We experienced notes of butterscotch, cola, and maple syrup from this lovely blend of coffees from Puebla, made available to us by our friends at Red Fox Coffee Merchants.
